The story of Arte City Media

Follow your intuition

In 2006, fresh out of high school, Matthew Hoyos’s intuition spoke up, loud and clear: buy a video camera. No plan, no hesitation. He went and got one, and his life changed on the spot.

Matthew was hooked immediately. He became obsessed with creating videos and with learning everything it took to make them. He taught himself to shoot, to produce, to edit. And just as he started turning out work, right at that same moment, a brand-new website appeared where you could upload videos. This was the very beginning, before anyone was putting video online. It was called YouTube.

He started uploading, and the videos took off. One crossed a million views within a year or two of him picking up the camera, before “going viral” was even a phrase, before he knew what it meant. Then major networks started reaching out to him. A couple of years after buying that camera, he landed his first licensing deal, and his work was headed for television.

Go all in

In 2010, Matthew turned on truTV, a channel he’d watched for years, and saw his own work on the screen. That same year, he made video his full-time career. A year later, one of his music videos won Music Video of the Year at the Best in Dade Awards.

From there, the work kept spreading: Fox News, Nickelodeon, BBC, even theaters. And something else was happening along the way. The clients he worked with started growing fast, and the content played a big part in it: bigger audiences, wider reach, names that people started to recognize. As his clients grew, so did he, from local businesses to major brands and corporations, adding new skills and services every step of the way.

A new perspective

In 2017, that same intuition spoke up again, and Matthew picked up his first drone. It was a rebirth. The city he’d been filming for a decade suddenly opened up from above, and so did the business. Companies, film productions, major events and even cities started hiring him for aerial work. Then he began shooting drone hyperlapses of Miami, and that’s when things truly took off. They became a sensation on Instagram, drawing more than 120,000 followers and tens of millions of views. Today he’s recognized as one of Miami’s drone pioneers and among South Florida’s top aerial cinematographers.

Arte City Media

By 2020, Matthew had built a team. Over the years he had hand-picked the people he trusted most, cinematographers, editors, photographers and drone pilots he’d worked with along the way, and together they became Arte City Media.

The name means exactly what it says. Arte, because we don’t make videos and photos; we make art, with intention in every frame and meaning in every cut. City, because the city has been the muse from the very first shot. And Media, because we do it all: video, photography, aerial cinematography, time-lapses, directing, producing, post-production.

Twenty years in, Matthew is still having fun. This was never just a job. It’s a passion, a lifestyle, his art, and he’s out creating every single day, whether it’s for a client or a project of his own.

If you’ve read this far, we should probably work together.
